During your stay at Aoraki Alpine Lodge, don’t forget to look up and enjoy the spectacular clear night sky of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
Mt Cook Village is situated in the heart of the reserve, which is an area of unparalleled dark, clear night skies where light pollution is strictly controlled. It is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only a few on the planet.
Big Sky Stargazing offers expert-guided tours of the night sky over Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. The tour begins with an introduction and orientation in the indoor Digital Dome Planetarium, highlighting the unique features of the southern night sky.
The informative astronomy guides then take you on a short drive (transport provided) to a purpose-built stargazing facility. Use telescopes, astronomy binoculars and the naked eye to put your newly acquired knowledge into practise, identifying and exploring different elements of the spectacular southern sky.
Our team is happy to help Aoraki Alpine Lodge guests with information about stargazing tours.
